While this is a significant step toward improving access to doula care, we recognize that this process hasn’t been without challenges. Medicaid requirements and reimbursement rates vary from state to state, often creating frustrating barriers for birthworkers who are simply trying to care for their communities.

 At Cornerstone, we’re committed to advocating for birthworkers to be valued for the essential care they provide—without unnecessary gatekeeping. We believe that everyone deserves access to community-based care and that birthwork is a vital part of a just and equitable healthcare system.

 With more states in process, we’re hopeful for continued progress. We’ll keep you updated as our list of approved states grows.
